Movie Night (Hold the Date!) – The War Room – Sunday, May 1 6:00 – 8:30 pm

Movie Night (Hold the Date!). Join us for a special showing of The War Room on Sunday, May 1; 6:00 – 8:30 p.m.  Invite your friends an neighbours!

FOCUS ON THE FAMILY / PLUGGED IN Review – http://www.pluggedin.ca/movie-reviews/war-room/

War is as old as human history, an aged widow named Miss Clara narrates in the opening moments of War Room. “We fight for power. We fight for riches. We fight for rights. We fight for freedom,” she says. “There always seems to be something to fight about.”

That’s as true for individuals as it is for countries. Yet despite the reality of relational conflict, Clara observes, “Very few of us know how to fight the right way.” We fight each other instead of recognizing our common spiritual enemy, she says, the thief who comes “to steal, kill and destroy.” If we hope to thwart Satan’s schemes, to counter his cunning strategies to divide us, we’ll need a beefy battle strategy. A strategy that can come from only one place: time spent asking for God’s guidance in our prayer closet.

Or, as Miss Clara calls it, her “war room.”

Elizabeth Jordan doesn’t know anything about such secret spiritual places. Oh, this successful real estate agent, wife and mother is a Christian. But tending to the details of her life is all-consuming for her right now. Especially when one of those details involves her deteriorating relationship with her husband, Tony.

Tony’s a star sales rep for a pharmaceutical company, a natural born talker whose megawatt smile has magnetic appeal. He pulls in four times as much money as Elizabeth does—a fact he’s quick to remind her of when she tries to give her sister some of it. Tony, you see, has no interest in helping people who are hardly working when he’s working so hard.

Tony doesn’t have much interest in his wife, either.

And caught in the middle of this troubled couple’s conflict is 10-year-old daughter Danielle, who longs for her parents’ love and attention … and longs for them to stop yelling at each other.

Reenter Clara. Elizabeth’s path crosses Clara’s when the older woman needs a real estate agent. And while Elizabeth’s trying to get the info she needs to sell her house, Clara can’t quit showing her she cares about more than just business. Soon a friendship is born, one in which an older woman begins to disciple a younger one about fighting the right way against theright enemy in the right place.

In the war room.

Making Use of Scripture Studies for the Gospel of John – Spring & Summer 2016

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God,  a worker who doesn’t need to be ashamed,  correctly teaching the word of truth. – 2 Timothy 2:15 (HCSB)

As a church family, we desire to grow in the whole counsel of God believing that “[all] Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Tim 3:16-17).

Along with our commitment to expository preaching that is based on working through books of the Bible we provide Scripture Studies that focus primarily on deepening our understanding of the Scripture passage on which the Sunday morning message is based.

While Scripture Studies (SS) and the Sermon Focus aim to be similar, the objective of our Scripture Studies is to lead you through the Gospel of John chapter by chapter whereas the Sermon focus deals with various themes found in John.

Our hope is that their use will increase both attentiveness and note-taking during the Sunday morning messages, as people know that they will be revisiting the Scripture passage that week in their own personal study and potentially in discussion with their LifeGroup and/or other significant relationships.

Scripture Studies for the Gospel of John (Spring & Summer 2016) can be found free online at https://whyteridgebaptist.ca or can be bought at cost from our information centre ($3 – notes only; $5 with binder)

Included in our Scripture Studies for the Gospel of John are three separate documents that have been given the following headings:

Notes

Designed as the primary resource in the Scripture Studies, this document contains the following elements:

  • Portions of the Scripture passage to be studied from the Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB).
  • Notes from:
    • the HCSB Study Bible
    • the Apologetics Study Bible,
    • and the New Living Translation (NLT) Life Application Bible

Commentary

This document is for those who desire a more in-depth study of the passage.  It contains information from the New American Commentary and represents the finest in contemporary evangelical scholarship. The scholars used the New International Version as the standard in their translation.

**Scripture divisions used in our series and the NAC differ from each other. This is the reason for the occasional discrepancy between the verse range listed in our series and the commentary notes provided in our Scripture Studies.

Questions

This document contains numerous discussion questions created by the developers of the best-selling Life Application Bible and are designed to support a natural teaching flow: Open it, Explore It, Get It, and Apply It.

Use these questions to stimulate your study of the Scripture passage – but do not aim to work through them all. Skim the questions and make use of the ones that resonate with you the most. If you have only a brief time to spend in this document, take special note of the questions that are highlighted with an “*”.

If you’re part of a LifeGroup, we suggest that you contribute to the discussion by coming prepared with one or two questions for your members to discuss. Feel free to create your own questions – in fact, that is preferable.

**Scripture divisions used in our series and the resource we use for questions differ from each other.  For this reason, the questions given for each week may vary slightly from the range of verses used in our sermon series

Promise Keepers Men’s Conference – March 4th and 5th

“Only fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you.” 1 Samuel 12:24

Fear often plays a greater role than we realize. The fear of the unknown; fear for our jobs, our relationships, leaves many of us anxious. The fear of failure leaves other men stuck rather than pursuing the life God has called them to. Far too many men are either held back by fear or afraid of nothing and leaving a trail of damage in the lives around them. Discover the freedom that comes when we fear only God. Walk in the fear of the Lord as a daily lifestyle. Consider the great things God has done for you and allow Him to do great things through you.

January 2016 General Meeting Report

On Sunday evening, January 31st, we gathered together to review our year-end reports and celebrate what God has done with and through us.  Our Moderator opened the meeting with Lamentations 3:21-22, ”This I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end…”  The meeting was about ‘calling to mind’ what had happened and been achieved over the past year, showing how God had been at work in the lives of our people and acknowledging how we had honoured Him in our love and service.

After the minutes of the November meeting were accepted, we rejoiced in accepting Susan and George Shallcross and Jennifer and Sean Major into membership at WRBC.  Then it was on to the reports from the Senior Pastor, Moderator, Associate Pastors, The Wave, and Children’s Ministries which were presented, discussed and accepted.  Dave Barton, the Chair of Finance, then presented the Financial Report and advised the meeting that the yearend numbers had changed slightly from what was published in the Annual Report in the amount of about $1,500.  Dave led us through the results of our General Fund, Benevolent Fund, Capital Fund and Missions Trip Fund to the result that we had missed meeting our overall disbursements by only $1,847.  Dave then went on to issue a challenge to us as follows:

“That we will continue to meet the requirements of our General Fund (and Missions Trips and Benevolent Funds) as we enter into our Capital Funds Campaign.”

Please note that the corrected financial reports have been updated in the Annual Report 2015 final.

After the Financial Report was accepted, the Church Clerk’s Report was presented showing our present membership at 183 and this was accepted.  (187 with the four additions from this meeting.)

Having looked back and reviewed this past year, we changed our focus to what lies ahead.  David Wynne reviewed our attendance numbers for the past four (4) years and updated the meeting on the Board Retreat from November and how the Board has been looking at our attendance with a view towards growth.  The Board has been looking at many options including replacing the pews with chairs, moving Children’s Ministries to the first service to make more room in the second service, parking at the Dairy Queen and other potential options to open up more room in the second service.  There was excellent participation and discussion from the floor as we considered these options and these questions will be taken out to the rest of our congregation.  Our hope is that our people will share their thoughts and even volunteer to shift their attendance to the first service for the next couple of years to open up space and parking in the second service for new comers.  Throughout this discussion it was wonderful to note the interest, openness and support for new ideas aimed at growing our outreach, worship and service to God.

From the focus on growth, we started to look ahead at what is happening with our plans for building.  The plans have been posted for a few weeks now and the Building Committee has received many questions and good feedback.  The attendees were informed of the importance of asking questions now while changes can be made because once the plans are drawn, it becomes prohibitively expensive to make changes.  The Moderator then updated everyone on Azhar Laldin’s role as Project Manager to draft the plan and steps of each committee and the Board in order to plan the timeline and ensure that each step is successfully completed and the appropriate responsibilities are set and signoffs received.

Finally, we moved to the most important part of the evening – prayer.  The Moderator commented of the different methods available to request prayer and of the encouragement received when emails are received saying “I prayed for you.”  The chairs of the three committees were then called to the front along with the pastoral staff and we prayed over them asking for the Lord’s guidance, directions, strength and blessings while they continue to move us through the building process.  The meeting was then turned over to Tim Hague, The Chair of the Prayer Committee, as he led us through a time of group prayer.  Tim also commended the people on being so open and receptive of the discussion on potential changes to our current services etc.  Tim then closed the prayer time by leading us all in our Guiding Prayer.

The Moderator then asked if there was any business from the floor and, hearing none, entertained a motion to adjourn.

David Wynne

Moderator
