SONSeekers Easter 2020 Update!

Happy Easter SONSeekers!

Jesus is Alive! God sent His son to die on a cross to save us from our sin and he rose again on the third day to defeat death. Because of this great sacrifice we can have forgiveness and the promise of eternal life! Hallelujah!

We have a special Easter lesson today brought to you from Mr Josh and Mr Girish! Let’s have a listen…

Reflections on Passover and COVID-19

So many times in history people’s lives were suddenly and shockingly changed: various Communist or military take overs, wars, floods, epidemics. COVID-19 is such an event for our generation.

Interesting that this is happening during Lent in our part of the world. I’ve been thinking of the Passover, when Jewish people stayed in their homes, with lamb’s blood on their doorframes, so the angel of death would pass over them. Isaiah 26:20 also says, “Go, my people, enter your rooms and shut the doors behind you; hide yourselves for a little while until his wrath has passed by.”

If we look at the context, God’s people are to hide because His wrath is not directed at them but at His enemies. We don’t know all God’s purposes in the spiritual realm, but this does feel like waiting for the Angel of Death to pass over our homes, only more insecure because there is no lamb’s blood that will protect us physically and COVID-19 is not directed at specific people.

What were God’s people to do as they waited? They were to prepare for action, including getting rid of the yeast in their homes which would slow them down from obeying God’s command to move forward. This is likewise a time for each of us to examine ourselves and get rid of the yeast in our own homes, which keep us from God. How about busyness and distractions that cause us to lose sight of true values and priorities? What about feelings of self-sufficiency and control over our own lives which blind us to need for God? Or selfishness which blinds us to the needs of others? Invisible, powerful enemies can defeat us.

We’re aware there is no lamb’s blood that will protect us from COVID-19. There is no barrier we can put up, which is why we need to keep distance from each other. Jesus gave us a warning and a comfort, just before He took on the role of Passover Lamb: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Perhaps the big question for us is: will we participate in His victory? Will COVID-19 help us work on dumping our spiritual yeast and drawing closer to our Heavenly Father? Will we be ready to do whatever He asks of us as we connect with others virtually, and as we come out of our homes again?

Message to WRBC Church Family

Re: Giving in the season of Covid-19

Worshipping in the time of physical isolation is not easy! God desires relationship and relationship is best done in community. Coming together to worship is a way we nurture that relationship… with God and with each other. Still, God cannot be relegated to any one form of fellowship, so we know He is with us in this time of physical isolation, each in our own homes. Isn’t it great to know that the one we worship is receiving our worship regardless of how many are in one place?

We have been communicating with you over the past weeks to remind you that in this time of virtual services, there are different ways you can continue to worship your Heavenly Father through giving.

Think of this time as the virtual offering basket time.

While we recognize many of you might be feeling financial stress due to potential or real job loss or lay off and others with uncertainty of income due to market effects on your retirement income, we know you are still wanting to give in some way.

As we respond to this unprecedented season you are asked to prayerfully consider how you can continue to support the work and ministry of WRBC financially. Some of you already give by direct debit. This will continue regardless of our coming together. Most of you give when attending a service, in fact 70% of our weekly offering comes in cheques and cash. This is putting some pressure on our cash flow.

I just wanted to remind you this morning about the various ways you can continue to give, even if we are not meeting here together.

…. they are also listed on our website: https://www.whyteridgebaptist.ca/give/)

  1. Take advantage of giving from home by using the Tithe.ly app.
  2. Set up automatic giving from your bank account (please refer website or contact Shirley Wynne – sawynne@shaw.ca or 204-781-9187 for the set up form).
  3. Send money to the church electronically by e-transfer (to do this you can contact the church office by phone or email, Shirley Wynne or Krista Wynne directly) Office@whyteridgebaptist.ca
  4. Send cheques to the church via Canada post
  5. Here is a new one…. If you want to give but cannot get out for whatever reason, we have a few good people standing by to come to your home to pick up a cheque or cash offering…. Anytime, anywhere (well almost!). Please call or email Shirley Wynne or Kathy Kornelsen to arrange: sawynne@shaw.ca or 204-781-9187; Office@whyteridgebaptist.ca or 204-489-3875
  6. Drop by the church during office hours to drop off a cheque or cash (2405 McGillivray Blvd)

May God be Glorified in how we as a congregation respond to this new and challenging season.

Your Finance Committee is meeting regularly to monitor and manage our church’s financial affairs. Your prayers for wisdom and discernment are appreciated.

God Story: Sebastian Klassen

For those who don’t know me, my name is Sebastian Klassen. Over the last three years during my time at university I have made Whyte Ridge Baptist my home Church in Winnipeg. I am grateful for the welcoming environment and the friendly people at Whyte Ridge Baptist Church.

This summer I had the opportunity to work at Winkler Bible Camp. Winkler Bible Camp (WBC) is a safe place for kids to come during summer. At WBC kids have the opportunity to develop new skills, make new friends and grow closer to God. WBC shares the gospel with kids that are not yet Christians as well as helps kids who are Christians to continue to grow in their own faith. One of the things that I like about working at Winkler Bible Camp is that they also work with staff in their own faith journey. I can confidently say that I have matured as a Christian while working at WBC. My highlights from this summer was playing with the kids at activities and singing songs in Chapel.

I would like to thank Whyte Ridge Baptist Church for being my home church in Winnipeg while I was at university. It was a privilege to attend WRBC and make connections with many of you. You may not see me much as I have moved back to Winkler.

Thank you for your support and encouragement.

Sebastian Klassen

Recreational Marijuana is Arriving on October 17th. Let Us Stop It While We Can – Sign the Petition.

As reported earlier, the government of Canada has passed a law which makes the recreational use of marijuana legal in Canada.  This law is set to come into effect on October 17, 2018. Besides exposing youth and vulnerable groups to the public health and safety risks associated with cannabis use, as well as sending the message that drug use is acceptable, this law will place Canada in violation of the United Nations Conventions on Narcotic Drugs, as well as the Convention on the Rights of the Child; both to which Canada is a signatory and party.  The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime issued a statement regretting the decision of the Canadian government to legalize marijuana for non-medicinal purposes.

There is an on-line petition available.  The purpose of the petition is to call on the International Narcotics Control Board to intervene and bring this matter to the immediate attention of the General Assembly of the United Nations in order to apply international pressure on the Trudeau government to revoke marijuana legalization and to recommit itself to these conventions it has agreed to uphold. It is available here:

https://www.citizengo.org/en-ca/fm/164840-call-canada-revoke-cannabis-legalization-and-uphold-its-treaty-obligations

Please sign it, to protect Canada’s youth and vulnerable populations, to uphold Canada’s UN Treaty obligations and to stand against the moral decline of our society. Legalization of marijuana would affect every Canadian in numerous ways. No one is immune. Let us act while there are still some things we can do.

1,2,3,4,5 – Get on your knees and pray with me.

The following is an update from IBK Akin, Provincial Director of Child Evangelism Fellowship of Manitoba and Nunavut Ministries. IBK and his family attend WRBC.

An adventurous week 1 and week 2 of summer clubs…

1 team of 3 ladies, did not have a physical address to a club location so in following their GPS directions in one of those remote communities they got led to a muddy road and the car got stuck. Alas! there was also no phone signal, so they trekked back to the highway to get help and unfortunately missed the club for Day 1.

2 separate teams got a flat tire and that also affected getting to clubs. #cartroubles

3 teams had a stressful first few days: some from the things mentioned above and others were the enemy using just about anything to disturb team unity and communication so as to not let our summer workers be as effective.

4 salvation stories: Despite what feels like enemy attacks, there were 4 confirmed salvation (Hurray!) stories just from the Training Clubs week.

5 refugee immigrant siblings are serving with us from a family of 9 (Katotoka Family) That is impressive – 2 of the 5 are returnees. Being from the same family is tricky for support raising since they have to approach the same groups at church so CEF has launched a gofundme page just for this family. We are also looking out for matching donors for them.

I share this with you to ask that you pray for our 22 missionaries as they travel Manitoba teaching children about God’s love and grace. We are in a battle for souls and implore you to fight with us on your knees!

Canada Needs a Law on Abortion – Please Sign the Petition.

Canada has had no laws regarding the issue of abortion since 1988 when the Supreme Court struck down the law which had been in place. It means abortion is allowed on demand at any stage of fetal development, by any method and for any and all reasons.

The only other nations in the world which have absolutely no laws on abortion are North Korea, China and Vietnam (http://www.prowomanprolife.org/2014/02/25/canada-is-one-of-four-countries-without-abortion-restrictions/).

Brad Trost, a Conservative MP from Saskatchewan, has sponsored a petition to the House of Commons which calls for: “respectful debate with the intent to form an all-party committee that will draft a bill governing the conduct of abortion in Canada”, and “that consideration of this bill will be by a free vote in the House”. The goal would be to pass a law that will balance the rights of a pregnant woman to choose with the rights of the unborn, as well as other stake holders such as the father and the parents of pregnant, pre-adult females. Laws would also provide limits on the use of abortion to prevent or reduce the number of births of certain racial groups, to limit the practice of gender selection and to protect the physically/developmentally challenged.

Do you believe that all life is ordained, created and sustained by God from conception to natural death so that our attitude must be for life not against? If so, we ask you to sign the petition at:

Thank you very much.

Update on Marijuana Legalization (Bill C-45): Passed Into Law

On June 21, 2018, Bill C-45 (Legalization of Marijuana) received Royal Ascent making Canada only the second nation in the world to legalize marijuana. (Uruguay is the only other country where marijuana is legal.)

The federal government has declared that October 17, 2018 will be the first day that marijuana may legally be sold, purchased and consumed.  They said that the delay is necessary to give the provinces time to prepare the framework for enforcing the new law, to set up production, and sales and distribution systems.

Here in Manitoba, the provincial government has set 19 as the legal age for consuming marijuana (one year older than the federal law) and has banned the home cultivation of marijuana (which the federal law allows).  The federal government has said that it would not forbid any province to make its own laws regarding the legalization of marijuana, but has also said that it would support the right of private citizens to challenge those laws in court.

MY Canada’s action and prayer points on how we as believers can navigate the passage of this new law include the following:

1. Contact provincial legislators, who are responsible for regulating marijuana
2. Contact municipal legislators regarding the location of sales outlets
3. Warn young people and parents
4. PRAY // Please join us in praying that regardless of the legalization in Canada the people would not buy it, so that it would not be profitable for the government to keep store fronts. Pray that our youth would not be affected with higher rates of drug use. May they see the dangers and not want to purchase it.
